Meditation Monday: Father Forgive Us For We Know What We Are Doing

Meditation Monday is where I share my reflections on Sunday’s sermons from my church, Watson Chapel Baptist Church, Pastor Todd Howard. Yesterday our church focus was on celebrate life Sunday. Pastor Todd’s message focused on the area of abortion and was titled Father Forgive Us. He had 9 thoughts we should consider when thinking about life and abortion:

  1. States treat the killing of the unborn as homicide, except when it is the “choice” of abortion.
  2. The inconsistency of fetal surgery to save babies vs. abortion.
  3. Dependency on another is irrelevant in determining personhood.
  4. Humanity is unique because we are created in the image of God.
  5. All organs are present at 8 weeks in the womb.
  6. When two rights conflict, the higher value should be protected.
  7. Abortion does not eliminate future sorrow or suffering.
    • Some argue to abort the baby because the baby may suffer through life for various reasons. Planned or unplanned pregnancies has no bearing on whether a child will suffer or experience sorrow. Anyone who is born will experience sorrow and suffering at some level.
  8. When you cheapen life in any area, there will be more abuses among those whose lives are cheapened.
    • The Holocaust
    • Slavery
    • Abortion
  9.  The helpless in creation is the special object of God’s loving care and it should be the special object of the church’s loving care also.

For those of you who have been touched by abortion in anyway, there is hope, forgiveness and grace through the cross of Christ.

Meditation Monday is where I share my reflections on Sunday’s sermons from my church, Watson Chapel Baptist Church, Pastor Todd Howard. Currently we are going through 2 Corinthians and Genesis. We are back in 2 Corinthians this week and in the evening Mr. Clayton Rhodes spoke to us concerning the mission work of Children Legacy International.

2 Corinthians 2:5-11

11 so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs.

Have you ever quoted a verse without realizing the context that verse was written in? In this passage we read that Paul is exhorting or better yet testing the faith of the Corinthians to see if they will forgive and welcome back a repentant brother. Isn’t that interesting that being a person that forgives is a testing of your faith. Why is that? Forgiveness is the Gospel. When we forgive we are acting out the Gospel here on earth with our fellow brothers and sisters. One of the most memorable quotes from yesterday is,

The Christian is never more like Christ than when he extends forgiveness.

Back to my question at the begginning about quoting a verse and not realizing the context. I have quoted 2 Corinthians 2:11 many times without realizing the context. The context of this passage adds so much to that verse. This verse is quoted in the context of forgiveness. So when we harbor unforgiveness in our heart are we outwitted by satan? When we refuse to forgive are we ignorant of Satan’s devices? The Holy Spirit through Paul says we are.

The issue of forgiveness is covered throughout the Scriptures, God in his sovereignty knew that us fallen humans would struggle with it. But we are new creations in Christ, we are sealed and filled by the Holy Spirit who empowers to live a Christ life walk. Part of that Christ life walk is walking in forgiveness.

Another strong point that Pastor Todd made is that when you refuse to forgive an offense you are setting your self up as god. Where have we heard that lie before, “you will be like god.” Same old bag of tricks. Satan will try anything to set you up to put yourself in the place of god and yet sometimes we so willingly fall for the trap.
