The Early Bird Gets The Link

Here is today’s edition of The Early Bird, happy reading.

We Spent Our Best Years Overseas. And They Were Extremely Hard.

On the eve of that grandbaby’s 16th birthday, I’m looking back and can testify to two seemingly opposing truths: They were our best years, and they were extremely hard.

The Secret Enemy in Your Marriage

In that and many other times we walked away from conflict instead of talking through it, my wife and I fell prey to the secret enemy that hides in every marriage.

God, Thank You I’m Not Like Those Prosperity Preachers

Are there times we must stand firm for the gospel? Absolutely. Should we ever compromise truth to reach people? No. But we must resist the urge to swing to the extremes of constant attack or total apathy, becoming little more than Facebook finger-pointers and armchair tweeters. We must remember the “why” behind refuting errors and witnessing for truth. Souls are at stake. Time is short

Trevin Wax on Declining Baptism and Membership Numbers Within the SBC

16 Ways to Promote Unity Amid Political Disagreement
The more our culture looks to government to solve our problems and be our savior, the higher the culture-war stakes will become on both sides.

Needed: Women Disciplers

In an era of blogs, social media, and live-streamed events, Christian women are no longer limited to discipleship relationships in the local church. Instead, teaching and mentoring is increasingly outsourced to the leaders standing on national platforms.

8 Ways to Read (a Lot) More Books This Year

And then last year I surprised myself by reading 50 books. This year I’m on pace for 100. I’ve never felt more creatively alive in all areas of my life. I feel more interesting, I feel like a better father, and my writing output has dramatically increased. Amplifying my reading rate has been the domino that’s tipped over a slew of others.

Deadly Doctrines: The Pattern and Protection

How does a church come to reject sound doctrine? How do we guard ourselves against false teachers and their deadly doctrines? How do we protect ourselves, our families, and our churches from their seductive lies? Thankfully, God has given us clear guidance in his Word, showing us how churches descend into deadly doctrine and how we may protect ourselves against it.

10 Things You Should Know about Hell and Eternal Conscious Punishment

I take no special delight in writing this article. But hell is real and people are going there. So let’s look closely at what the Bible has to say about it as well as the on-going debate over whether hell is eternal conscious punishment.

Two Questions that Crackdown on Excuse Making

Excuses are the reason careers get stuck, life is on hold, and relationships grow dissatisfying.

You Don’t Have to Get Married to Be Happy

Romantic love is a heart terrorist unless it is anchored in a higher love.

November 8th is finally here, election day here in America. Get out and vote, trust in the Lord and live out the Gospel wherever you may live. With that said here are some good reads for your day.

Jesus Paid Taxes

Mark Dever delivers an excellent sermon concerning the Christian and government. One of the best I’ve heard.

Marriage Isn’t Meant to Meet Your Needs

When we approach marriage expecting our needs to be met, we fail to understand the real nature of love, and we sow seeds of marital destruction. God hasn’t designed marriage as a means to meet our personal needs. Assuming marriage is about meeting needs is dangerous for at least two reasons.

When A Man Loves A Woman Well

Fear God, Honor The King

We don’t have to like the state of the world around us—frankly, we’re right to be horrified as society sprints toward hell. But how we react to it—and especially to the authorities over us—speaks volumes about our faith, our confidence in the Lord, and our submission to His redemptive plan.

The Theological Liberalism Behind the Conservative Biblical Proof Text for American Christian Revival

Often, the way this verse will be preached in many evangelical pulpits is as a rallying cry. In so many sermons, the “people” referred to in the passage are the American people, and the “land” is the American land. The meaning of the text is understood as an invitation to 21st century America to “return to God” and then enjoy God’s blessing once again. It’s no wonder one scholar said that 2 Chronicles 7:14 is “the John 3:16 of the American civil religion.”

Denial Through Affirmation

You have heard it before, haven’t you? “Jesus says nothing about same sex marriage.” Is it true?

This weekend I had the privilege of leading our Sunday School class through Matthew 19. Jesus is being tested by the Pharisses concerning divorce and Jesus answered,

And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful to divorce one’s wife for any cause?” He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” – Matthew 19:3-6

Did you see what Jesus did? Through his affirmation of marriage he was denying a culture of divorce. Imagine for a moment if Jesus walked the earth today, someone could walk up to Jesus and ask, is same sex marriage lawful? What would Jesus say?

His reply would be the same. He would affirm God’s original plan for marriage as He does in Matthew 19. Through Jesus affirmation of God’s original intent of marriage in Genisis he is denying,

  • Same Sex Marriage- He created them male and female and then Jesus’ affirmation of a man leaving and cleaving to his female partner is God’s original intent
  • Gender Identity- Jesus also speaks to our gender confusion culture. “”Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female.” God created people either male or female, the problem is we have separated gender identity from biological identity.
  • No Fault Divorce- Jesus speaks to a divorce for any reason culture.
  • Polygamy- Jesus takes us back to the Garden of Eden to where God created 1 male and 1 female. He also said a man should cleave to his wife not wives.

Through Christ affirmation of God’s original intent for marriage he is setting perimeters around marriage. Through his affirmation he is denying anything which strays from those perimeters. God’s word is timeless and speaks to us in the twenty first century. The question is, will we listen?

7 Lies We have Heard Concerning Church

Maybe you have heard or believed one of these.

“The church was never about us being good people, earning God’s favor, or being entertained. It was and is about the power and presence of Jesus Christ stirring up his gathered, chosen people to be amazed by his covering grace, comforted by his immoveable love, and guided by his infinite wisdom, all in worshipful response to his completed work on the cross for our sake and his glory.”

3 Ways The Gospel Changes Marriage

A Gospel worldview in life will change everything, because we are conforming to the image of Christ. Here are 3 ways the Gospel changes marriage.

Georgia Governor Invokes the Bible Against Christian Conscience

“The claim that we must violate our conscience because Jesus would not want us to “discriminate against anybody” is incoherent and unbiblical. But it’s Gov. Deal’s direct threat to the religious liberty of Christians that is most offensive.”

Taking The 9th Commandment Seriously

Short and to the point, but it packs a punch.
